Finally! I was working on this picture since November, and now I had enough time to finish it. The most difficult part was for the to find out the background. And I'm still bad at lineart.
So, this scene is taken from William Golding's Lord of the Flies, end of Chapter 11:
"The chief snatched one of the few spears that were left and poked Sam in the ribs. 'What d’you mean by it, eh?' said the chief fiercely. 'What d’you mean by coming with spears? What d’you mean by not joining my tribe?' The prodding became rhythmic. Sam yelled. 'That's not the way.' Roger edged past the chief, only just avoiding pushing him with his shoulder. The yelling ceased, and Samneric lay looking up in quiet horror. Roger advanced upon them as one wielding a nameless authority."
I've read the book many times but first time in English. This made the scene mentioned above clear, what happened exactly... This is my imagination about this scene. Samneric are frightened in the background. Jack's eyes are closed because of his rage or hate or something similar feeling. He closes his eyes because he knows what will happen next but don't want to watch. Roger looks back a bit, and he's not smiling but he's fierce. Jack has a spear but Roger hasn't, he will use his bare hands. Or maybe he has a spear in his right hand, I don't know. When I read this part in the book, I imagined some "bullet-time effect"... this sounds a bit weird, I know.
Edit: According to ~unicornomics's comment, I revised the picture and changed a bit. Also changed the title, because I've borrowed a book from the library: Brodie's Notes on Lord of the Flies (by Graham Hadley, 1965), and it claims that this certain sentence is said by Roger, but it was not sure for me. (I always thought that it's said by Sam or Eric.) I think it's a better caption for this picture (the original title was rather a working title.)
Great scene! I have never paid attention to the character of Roger, I had no idea that he had the courage to oppose Jack. x-x" you made me want to read that book again. by the way, I love the background!
Thank you! I'm happy that you liked the vakcground, it was difficult to make. I've read the book many times but just last time realized that he appears in more scenes than I remembered. However, I liked him for first read, I don't know why, but maybe for his name. (And I like negative characters in books, because I believe that they also have a soul!) As I wrote (or maybe not...) in the description, this scene came clear finally in English, because reading a foreign language is more challenging than my own, and I pay more attention to the text. Go, go read the book again!
ah, who doesn't like negative characters Personally I like Jack a lot And how about you? Do you like him? While reading the book again I will try to pay more attention to Roger I also tried to read LotF in English, the descriptions are just amazing
Yeah, without negative characters life would be boring, isn't it? Yes, I like Jack, his character was very well written and in the 1963 film excellently portrayed. And I liked the descriptions in the book, like his opaque eyes, or madness in his eyes. And he's red-haired and freckled. I just like people or characters with appearance like his... And as I told you I liked Roger from the beginning but I hoped secretly that he'd be a rather positive figure. And then came that infamous boulder incident with Piggy, and I was like, NOooooo...! But I still like him.
Of course it would! Yeah, Jack is well constructed. I believe all characters in this novel are and this is in my opinion it's greatest advantage. ^^ The descriptions are awesome at first I hated them, but when I finished the book I returned to them and they are oh! so colorful, and all these darker, wild places just make the story scarier.
I understand, it must have been really disappointing. I hoped that Jack would apologize to Ralph, but oh well... Luckily there is the fandom! By the way, Roger looks really good on your picture!
Yes, the descriptions are very good. At (primary) school I didn't like the descriptions in general very well, not reading or writing, but I've changed and I like the descriptions a bit more than dialogues.
The fandom solves everything... and it's so good that it exists! I never thought before that there's a fandom of LOTF...
